Humanity chose euthanasia. Over the course of 100 years, declining birth rates and fewer marriages led to humanity's gradual extinction. The dead were backed up into a virtual world called Beyond, while the empty reality they left behind was tended by AI. And so, Seoul became a liminal city.
Liminal City: Axiom of Maria Chapter One is a 3D Metroidvania action-adventure game that blends acrobatic traversal, puzzle-solving, exploration, storytelling, swordplay, and meticulously designed boss encounters. In a world where humanity has nearly vanished due to population collapse, reality and the unconscious are reversed for AI—Beyond, the virtual realm where the deceased are backed up, serves as their reality, while the physical world becomes their unconscious. To AI, humans have become like fleeting monsters in our dreams—beings that wander through AI's unconscious.
With humanity nearly gone, most institutions in South Korea have been replaced by AI, which now wage invisible wars—assimilating each other and competing for control over electricity. Kay arrives in the sealed COEX, controlled by the Trade Association AI, to meet a hacker named Kim Qyuri, who may have the key to finding Kay's missing husband. Kim Qyuri is being pursued by multiple factions, including AISOC. It is believed that she took refuge within the Trade Association to evade them, but as the story unfolds, the truth gradually reveals itself to be something else entirely.
