Misery Dungeon is a top-down, hand drawn (no AI), narrative tactical rpg.

Now that we’re done with the technical stuff: You will :

Play as Kern, princess of the Arelkrov kingdom, and her loyal squire, in a quest to reach the mysterious « Gift of the Old Earth ». To achieve it, you’ll need to make it to the summit of the Mountain Kto'lmaa. By mastering the magic flowing in your body, x@ be able to attain heights no one ever explored. By understanding the behaviours of the entities living in the dungeon, you’ll be able to defeat, or avoid, them. But most importantly, you’ll need to know your allies to avoid making them opponents.

GAMEPLAY

Misery Dungeon is heavily inspired by the Mystery Dungeon series, without the procedural generation. We want a tailored dungeon with crisp level design, a hint of metroidvania, and a fully coherent world where NPCs, mobs and environment react to the player influence.

The story is the most prevalent part of the game. The very unique UI of Misery Dungeon allows to always keep the protagonists mental state at check, and to make them speak even during gameplay. Your dialogue choices are important, and there’s A LOT of them. Just gotta find how to access them.

Combat is turn-based, but does not feel like it. Use your surroundings to your advantage, or mobs will.  There’s like 40 different skills, each with their own specificities. Mobs are all powerful in their own ways. Gathering information on how they behave is key to your survival.

We have a very unique levelling up system, but we can’t really tell you about it without spoiling the fun. Play the demo thoroughly, you’ll get it.

You can basically reshape the whole dungeon, if you’re willing to. There’s a bajillion secrets. GL guys.

Finally, as hinted before, the gameplay is about knowledge. The more you discover, the better you’ll play.

CHARACTERS

Kern, princess of Arelkrov, set herself in a deadly quest for power. She abandoned her homeland and family to prove them she is worthy of the Mountain, or so she thinks. Skilled with a sword, she also starts to master magic, a gift very few people possess.

Her squire is both a friend and a loyal servant. He is as much important to her survival than to her sanity. Depending on stuff we won’t spoil here, he can have one of three classes, changing his gameplay, dialogues and story altogether.

Some people found interest in the Mountain, braving the dangers in search for wealth, fame or power. Their objective might match yours, but be wary: The Mountain corrupts the minds wandering through it.

Help them, betray them ; all the while knowing they could do the same to you.

The Mountain Kto'lmaa also shelters some inhabitants ; people or… things that do not plan of ever going out.

Those are deeply affected by the Mountain’s curse, but this does not mean they only strive to hurt you. You’ll need their help ; after all no one knows the mountain as well as they do.

Some creatures, not sentient enough to deal with the curse of the Mountain, have lost the limited reason they once had. In exchange, they gained power. And hunger. For people like you.
