Some heroes are handed a prophecy. You have been handed a crate.

You are a wizard. Not a famous one. You have a cart that creaks, a lantern that mostly works, and a standing order from an alchemist who does not have time for people who drive badly.

Inside the crate: fever draughts, measured doses, wrapped in wool. Between you and the people who need them: a road that turns to mud past the low fields, one narrow plank causeway, and a bend that has humbled better drivers than you.

The Long Errand is a cozy fantasy delivery game about carrying fragile things across a small island, and about the people waiting at the other end.

Drive gently. The potions are listening.

Your cargo is not a number in a menu. It is real physical weight in the back of your cart, and it responds to every single thing you do.

Take a corner too fast and you will hear it before you see it. The clink of glass finding glass. The slosh of a sealed eel container that has opinions about your steering. Hit a root in the Oldwood at speed and the whole load lifts, lands, and settles a little worse than it was.

Nothing punishes you. There is no failure screen, no timer, no restart. The crate simply arrives in the state you brought it in, and the person receiving it says something slightly different depending on which state that is. Maret will make do. Maret always makes do. She would rather not have to.

Drive well and the game gets quieter. That is the whole reward, and it turns out to be enough.

One island, small enough to learn by heart

No open world. No map bloat. One island, four biomes, seven places worth going, and roads that were designed as carefully as the destinations.

Weather is a driving mechanic, not a filter. Rain softens roads. Fog closes the wetlands in. A squall rolls off the sea, takes your visibility for two minutes, and moves on.

Sixteen people, and none of them explain themselves

Edda packs the crates and does not suffer fools. Oswin runs the inn, loves a story, and has a past he steps around. Old Dex has lived in the bog his entire life and considers everywhere else a rumour. Ysel works the dock, never stands still, and asks you about every other settlement on the island with steadily increasing specificity. She never asks the actual question.

Nobody here gives you a quest. They give you a job, and then, slowly, as you keep turning up, they give you a little more than that. A sister they have not spoken to. A debt in another town. A letter they would rather nobody knew about. A sealed box that has been waiting twenty years for someone careful enough to carry it.

You will not fix any of this. You are not that kind of wizard. You are the one who arrives, sets it down gently, and drives on.

The cart is the whole point

It is your transport, your inventory, your workshop and your home. It is enchanted, imperfect, and audibly alive.

Upgrades at Bram's smithy are practical and atmospheric rather than powerful: better suspension so the road hits softer, padding and straps so the load moves less, a warmer lantern, storage that fits the awkward parcels, and a few arcane quirks that were arguably not necessary. Nothing makes cargo invincible. Nothing removes the need for careful hands. The cart just becomes more yours.

Things this game will never do to you

What is left is a slow drive through a place that is quietly alive, a load in the back that you are responsible for, and a handful of people who will notice that you kept turning up.

The road goes on
