A loaded freighter doesn't fly like an empty scout. The whoosh drive burns fuel to cross the long gaps, and fuel range decides how deep into the map you can go. The map starts safe and gets mean. The core is patrolled. The outer rings are pirate country, and that's where the money is. Better engines get you further, better guns keep you alive, and a bigger hold makes the trip worth taking.
