Campaign mode
The world map contains ports of different types. At the start, each side owns its capital ports, which have shipyards, trade income, and the ability to recruit missing crew after a battle.
To build ships, you need income from the trading ports under your control. Other ports let you recruit sailors, while ports with a shipyard let you build vessels.
Each turn you can move your ships one at a time or two at a time to any neighboring port, until you run out of movement points, which are restored every new turn.
When two opposing fleets meet, you can enter the battle and test your strength and skill, or choose auto-battle. The defending side can weigh anchor with up to two ships, and they will join the battle.
If there is no chance of winning a battle, a light ship can retreat to the nearest allied or neutral port, provided its speed is higher than that of the attackers.
The maximum number of ships in a port is 6. If the enemy has dug in at their last port, you can take it by siege: bring your ships closer and attack two vessels at a time in a single turn. If your fleet is stronger, the defender will eventually either run out of crew or lose all their ships to sinking.
At the start of every turn, the crew reserve available for hire is replenished in each port. At the same time, ships stationed in those ports can replenish their crew. If the siege isn't finished within one turn, the defender may receive reinforcements.
The loser is the side with no ships and no ports with a shipyard left.
