A train can be the vehicle you look after, one part of a railroad you run, or the cab you climb into for a scheduled service. Those are three different reasons to browse train games on PC. Choosing between them matters more than choosing steam or diesel.
Start with Derail Valley if coupling wagons, handling brakes and delivering freight sound like the evening you want. Its career gives that work a financial consequence: fuel and repairs come out of your earnings. For friends who want jobs across the same railroad, choose Railroader. For passenger services on authored routes, look at Train Sim World 7 and choose the route package deliberately.
Hands-on freight career
Run a railroad together
Passenger services
The useful split among these train simulator games is responsibility. Derail Valley puts it in your hands at the locomotive. Railroader lets you spread it across people and AI engineers. Train Sim World 7 lets you pick a service or explore a route without making railroad expansion the reason to drive.
Train games on PC for doing the freight work yourself
Choose Derail Valley first if getting a load to its destination interests you as much as driving between stations. Coupling, shunting, servicing and securing brakes belong to the same job. The tradeoff is that careless operation can become a bill, rather than a mistake you leave behind when a scenario ends.
Derail Valley
Recommendation
- Best for
- A solo freight career with work in and around the cab.
- Why it fits
- Delivery earnings buy licenses that open more vehicles and orders.
- Skip if
- You want a shared crew, or would resent fuel and repair costs in a career.
The open world gives you room to choose orders and move cargo between industries. Progress comes from carrying out those jobs and expanding what you are licensed to take on. That makes it the first pick here for someone who wants a reason to learn a locomotive's procedures, rather than simply collect locomotives.

If you like the machinery but dislike financial pressure, use its sandbox mode, where the economy is not the focus. VR is optional: the game supports ordinary desktop PC play as well as PC VR. It is single-player and remains in Early Access, so it is the wrong purchase for a group expecting to divide a shift among friends.
Run the railroad with a crew in Railroader
Choose Railroader when your ideal session includes deciding what several trains should do, especially with friends taking different jobs. It combines freight and passenger work on a transition-era Appalachian railroad. You gain a wider operation to coordinate; you also take on decisions beyond the cab you happen to be driving.
Railroader
Recommendation
- Best for
- Solo management or online co-op across a working railroad.
- Why it fits
- Customer contracts, railroad expansion and AI Engineers connect individual movements to the larger operation.
- Skip if
- You only want to select a modern passenger service and drive it.
Among these railroad games, this is the clearest choice for delegation. AI Engineers can drive while you concentrate on switching moves or other work. Signalling and the dispatcher role give you another way to participate without spending the entire session at a throttle. Online co-op supports the same appeal with human crew members; it is not a requirement to play.

Railroader is also in Early Access. Pick it because customer deliveries, contracts and expansion sound like worthwhile work. If those sound like administration between the drives you actually want, Derail Valley keeps the recommendation closer to an individual freight career, while Train Sim World 7 is the better branch for scheduled passenger services.
Take a passenger service in Train Sim World 7
Choose Train Sim World 7 first if your interest is taking a train along an authored passenger route and working within its timetable. Free Roam also lets you run your own journeys. The purchase decision is more specific than choosing the game: you need the routes and rolling stock that match the services you want to drive.
Train Sim World 7
Recommendation
- Best for
- Passenger driving on authored routes, with timetable and free-roam options.
- Why it fits
- Its route-based collection lets you choose the railway and services that interest you.
- Skip if
- You expect the free Starter Edition to contain the full passenger-route collection, or want online co-op.
Start by identifying a route you want to return to. Standard includes three new routes; Deluxe adds trains, and Ultimate includes a further collection of compatible content. A larger edition is useful only when its additions are things you want to operate. The game also includes freight work, but that does not turn it into Railroader's expanding shared railroad.

Older compatible content may retain its original features rather than use every newer feature. That matters if a particular addition to Train Sim World 7 is the reason you are buying an older route. Steam lists the game as single-player; sharing creations online is different from driving with a co-op crew.
The wrong default: buying the biggest train collection
If you are comparing train games on Steam by the number of locomotives pictured, pause at the job you actually want. Start with Derail Valley for handling your own freight, Railroader for coordinating an operation, or a specific Train Sim World 7 route for passenger services. Buying more rolling stock cannot resolve a mismatch between those activities.
Train Sim World 7's free Starter Edition contains the Training Center. It is a useful way to try locomotive operation, not the full route collection shown across the store page. Choose an edition or add-on because it contains your intended route, rather than treating “free” as a promise that every pictured service is included.
There is a different trap with Derail Valley: treating career costs as inseparable from its appeal. Sandbox exists for players who want to operate without the economic focus. All three games list Windows builds on Steam; this selection does not promise native Mac or Linux versions.
Choose your first shift
If you are still torn, start with the freight job in Derail Valley. It offers the most direct match here for wanting to operate and look after a train yourself. Move to Railroader when coordinating other trains is the attraction, or Train Sim World 7 when a particular passenger route is what brought you here.
Choose career for earnings and costs, or sandbox for freedom from the economic focus.
Online co-op, solo play and AI Engineers support different ways to staff the operation.
Pick the route and edition together; the free download starts at the Training Center.
Open Derail Valley first if you have no route or crew in mind yet. Decide whether its freight career is the work you want before shopping for a larger collection of trains.
